Blue Zone #9 Right Tribe

Well, we’ve done it! This is the last newsletter devoted to the exploration of Blue Zones(click here to learn more). For those of you who have missed my newsletters this year, we’ve been examining the nine behaviors attributed to the world's healthiest and longest living people.

Right Tribe.

The last of the Power Nine looks at another social behavior. It appears that not only is it important to have a good group of peeps to hang and share with regularly, but WHO one spends time with is also important. Even the most ruggedly independent among us have to admit, because we are human, that we are subject to the influence of others around us. There’s an adage in the self-improvement community that suggests we essentially become, to a certain extent, the five people we spend the most time with. Many authors who write books about getting the most from our lives strongly suggest surrounding ourselves with people who are ‘better’ than us, in areas of life we strive to improve in. So, in the world of health, best not have your circle of friends be exclusively people who like to watch daytime TV, smoke, and eat doughnuts. Finding and making new friends is really hard. You have to put yourself ‘out there’ and be vulnerable. Trust me though, there are lots of people out there just like you! These are people that desire to be healthy and be connected to a group that reinforces a positive, enthusiastic way of looking at life. You can always find this at the mighty KMHC. We’re always looking for new members to join our tribe!
