Massage

Mike Aehl draws from a number of modalities to relieve pain, soften tissues, reduce adhesions, normalize muscle tone and increase range of motion.

Swedish/Relaxation Massage

The most common type of massage in the west is Swedish Massage. It forms the foundation for most therapies used today. Swedish Massage includes long gliding strokes(effleurage), kneading (petrissage), friction, rhythmic tapping (tapotement) and vibration/shaking. All are used to relax the muscles, increase the flow of blood and oxygen into the tissues while imparting a sense of well being.

Neuromuscular Therapy/Trigger Point

There are over 400 hundred muscles in the body, any of which could develop trigger points which often result in referral pain and can cause dysfunction. An “active” trigger point causes pain and restricts movement. A “latent” trigger point is not felt until pressure is applied but can also restrict movement and distort posture. When pressure is applied, trigger points feel like knots or tight bands in the muscle. They are often tender, fatigue more easily and don’t return to a relaxed state.

Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue massage is not necessarily working harder or with more pressure.Rather it uses varying amounts of pressure to access the deeper layers of muscle in the body such as the diaphragm, hip flexors and deeper rotational muscles of the back and hips.

Myofascial Release

Trauma, inflammatory response and/or surgical procedures can create myo (muscle) fascial (connective tissue) restrictions causing pressure and pain. Myofascial release is a safe and effective technique that involves applying gently sustained pressure into the muscle and connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

Pin and Stretch/Active Release

In this technique pressure is applied to an area and patient then goes through a passive or active range of motion with the therapist to eliminate restrictions within that tissue

Tui Na

This is a therapeutic form of massage that has been applied for thousands of years in China. Tui Na uses a number of different techniques to apply pressure to acupoints, meridians, muscles and nerves to remove blockage that interrupts the free flow of Qi.

Sports Massage

Sports Massage is a form of massage that utilizes specific strokes (compression, circular friction) to help athletes obtain maximum performance and physical conditioning by increasing power, endurance, and mobility- both before or after an event or exercise.
