Simple Reminders In Stressful Times

While we are practicing social distancing and taking extra measures to remain safe and healthy, it is no secret that the virus pandemic we are encountering is increasing our stress and anxiety levels.  Although stress and anxiety are something we experience throughout our lives, it is nice to remind ourselves of some of the simple and effective ways we can reduce levels and make the most out of these challenging days.

A consistent exercise program can do wonders for the mind and body and provides many benefits. It can lower your stress hormones, improve quality of sleep, help to maintain weight and promote body confidence. Now that things are warming up, walking once or twice a day is another wonderful activity that includes the added bonus of connecting to nature.

It’s also helpful to have a regular routine in your day. You can begin by creating a To-Do list while enjoying your morning beverage. As the day goes on and you check things off the list, you’ll feel good and be surprised by all that you have been able to accomplish! No more procrastination guilt! Click here to read the article "50 + Ways to Beat Cabin Fever During Coronavirus Social Distancing."

It goes without saying that eating healthy, getting a good night’s sleep and avoiding stimulants help keep things in check . But did you know that chewing gum has been shown to be most beneficial as well in lowering stress?  It increases the blood flow to the brain therefore enhancing one’s sense of well-being and elevating your mood!

Daily meditation/mindfulness while listening to soothing music can be another effective way to relax. Find fifteen minutes in your day to stop, breathe and be present. Just like exercise, when done on a regular basis, you can achieve great results.

Supplements can be an effective way to reduce stress

Finally, supplements are an effective way to both reduce stress and anxiety. Since supplements can interact with medications or have side effects, you may want to consult with your doctor if you have a medical condition.

  • Lemon balm: Lemon balm is a member of the mint family that has been studied for its anti-anxiety effects.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: One study showed that medical students who received omega-3 supplements experienced a 20% reduction in anxiety symptoms.

  • Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat stress and anxiety. Several studies suggest that it’s effective.

  • Green tea: Organic green tea contains many polyphenol antioxidants which provide health benefits. It may lower stress and anxiety by increasing serotonin levels.

  • Valerian: Valerian root is a popular sleep aid due to its tranquilizing effect. It contains valerenic acid, which alters gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors to lower anxiety.

  • Kava kava: Kava kava is a psychoactive member of the pepper family. Long used as a sedative in the South Pacific, it is increasingly used in Europe and the US to treat mild stress and anxiety.
