Essential Electrolytes
During these hot summer days when addressing proper hydration, we need to also note the important role that electrolytes play in maintaining healthy body functions. Our bodies require more than simply water to stay hydrated. The bloodstream needs essential electrolytes to retain the water we consume in order to keep us functioning at peak performance and feeling good. Electrolytes can be quickly lost through the sweat of our skin, urine or when breathing rapidly which is why it’s important to keep them in check and balanced daily!
Electrolytes are minerals in our body (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride and phosphate). They carry an electrical charge when mixed with water. We get them from the foods we eat and the fluids we drink. They regulate nerve and muscle function, hydrate the body, balance blood acidity and pressure, and help rebuild damaged tissue. They do this by powering our cells to work efficiently. Magnesium is an essential and important mineral for dehydration because it supports the body’s ability to retain the sodium and potassium levels critical to regulating almost every important function.
Dehydration and an imbalance of these electrolytes in the bloodstream can lead to unpleasant or even serious consequences if left unchecked.
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may have low/high electrolyte levels: fast heart beat, fatigue, weakness, confusion, numbness, nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, constipation.
A few excellent food sources to help replenish electrolytes can include: dairy products, bananas (potassium), avocados, coconut water, watermelon. Sports drinks and other supplements are another way to replenish electrolytes and if taken on a regular basis can keep your electrolyte balance in check. When taking sports drinks be sure to read the label as some drinks have large amounts of sugar which I would recommend to avoid. A good hydration supplement should include the vital electrolyte magnesium, which is why if you are considering taking a supplement, I recommend NutriDyn’s Dynamic Hydrate.
