Stay Hydrated and Healthy!
During these warmer summer months, it’s good to be reminded of the importance water plays in maintaining our daily health and functioning. Water is an essential building block for life and something we need to keep us going. Yet surprisingly, many of us don’t drink even half of the daily amount recommended to keep dehydration away.
Why is water so important and what can we do to ensure our daily water intake is meeting our body’s needs? To begin with, proper hydration helps regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells and keeps organs functioning properly. Furthermore, it allows our bodies to maximize physical performance whether it be walking around the block or engaging in an extreme workout. Adequate hydration also improves energy levels and brain function. It can prevent and or treat headaches and has been found to be effective in relieving constipation and in treating kidney stones.
Experts recommend that women drink 11 cups (88 oz.) of water per day and men 16 cups (128 oz.). This may vary from individual to individual and these recommendations cover fluids from water, other beverages and food.
Here are a few simple ways that you can help your body take in more water each day and ensure that you are well hydrated and performing at peak level!
1. Drink water through a straw. Why? Taking in water through a straw allows you to drink larger amounts in a shorter period of time.
2. Add fruits and veggies to your diet. Watermelon, pineapple and tomato- all of which are more than 90% water.
3. Add ice to non-water drinks. This adds water to your beverage and keeps it cool.
4. Avoid or eliminate caffeine and/or alcohol from your diet.
