Blue Zone - Wine at 5

The next Blue Zone trait that researchers found contributes to a long, healthy life is called, “Wine at 5”. Out of the nine traits that contribute to a long healthy life, this one is the most controversial. They basically determined that people who have a drink or two on a regular basis, live longer. In many cases, these pockets of people drank mostly wine. Now, this flies in the face of many studies that showed that even mild to moderate alcohol consumption contributes to increased cancer rates, especially in women. I’ve read some opinions that the alcohol is only part of the equation, but not the whole story. Could it be that the environment and circumstances in which the booze is consumed makes a difference?
I suspect it does. If you sit down with family and friends in a happy environment where people are sharing about their lives and having a drink that, in most cases lowers inhibition, I can certainly see where that would be therapeutic. The type of alcoholic beverage likely makes a difference as well. The wine the folks in Sardinia drink is absolutely loaded with antioxidants.
Now, if I can only find a way to enjoy my homebrew without gaining weight….
