Leaky Gut Syndrome

I recently came across an article on Leaky Gut Syndrome and it piqued my curiosity. Since my own digestive health has been improved by simply changing my diet and adding supplements, I decided to read a little further to gain a better understanding.

Leaky Gut Syndrome can also be thought of as “increased intestinal permeability.” This is a situation where bacteria and toxins are able to “leak” through the intestinal wall and into a person’s bloodstream. This toxic leakage into the bloodstream can lead to many different symptoms including unwanted digestive issues, bloating, food allergies, skin problems and decreased energy levels. It may also contribute to such diseases as diabetes, Crohn’s, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Here are a few factors that are suspected contributors to LGS:

*Excessive sugar intake
*Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen
*Excessive alcohol intake
*Nutrient deficiencies such as vitamin A, vitamin D, and zinc
*Stress
*Poor gut health or lack of “friendly” bacteria within digestive system

What can a person do to prevent LGS and improve gut health?  You can begin by limiting your intake of refined carbs and alcohol. If possible, reduce the use of NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) Also, be sure to eat plenty of high fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Add fermented foods to your diet: plain yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha. These are great sources of “friendly” bacteria. Lastly, take probiotics and other “gut friendly” supplements recommended by Dr. Venske or myself at KMHC.

In summary, I feel so much better after making the changes to improve my own gut health. I reduced my sugar and refined carbs intake and increased the intake of vitamins A, D, and zinc plus incorporated more gut ‘friendly’ bacteria into my diet. I now have increased energy, better focus and attention skills and improved overall health. I recommend trying many of the above mentioned items along with taking probiotics sold at KMHC.
